The financial center of the Philippines is a national record holder in many regards: highest concentration of businesses, richest local government unit, and the largest skyscrapers. Now Makati has been announced the global number one in another discipline: taking selfies.

Jump shots by the beach, food pics for Instagram, family photos on any occasion - taking pictures is part of everyday life in the Philippines. Therefore, it does not come as a big surprise that Makati and Pasig City produce more selfies per head than any other city in the world, according to calculations by the Time Magazine.

For our more unaware readers: "selfies" are self-shot photographs, usually produced in low quality with camera phones, often in front of bathroom mirrors. Meant for immediate release on social media platforms like Facebook, selfies are highly popular among teens, twentysomethings, and apparently among the good-looking young professionals of Metro Manila as well.

For its selfie city world ranking, the American magazine Time built a database of more than 400,000 Instagram photos tagged “selfie” that included geographic coordinates. Makati and Pasig city rank number 1 with 258 selfie-takers per 100,000 people. Manhattan and Miami came in 2nd and 3rd. The southern Philippine City of Cebu ranks 9th.
