Metro Manila · Noli Me Tangere - The Opera (September 11 - 28)
Noli Me Tangere is arguably the most important novel of the Philippines. The much-praised operatic adaption is now coming to Manila, telling a story of forbidden love and colonial repression with passionate songs in Tagalog.
The opera in three acts was composed in the 1950s by Felipe Padilla De Leon, Philippine National Artist for Music. The current production premiered in New York City earlier in 2014. After successful shows in Washington D.C., it is finally coming to Manila this September.
Noli Me Tangere ("Touch Me Not") depicts Philippine life under Spanish colonial rule at the end of the 19th century. The writer of the novel, national hero José Rizal, was later executed by the Spaniards for supporting the Philippine revolution and fight for independence.
To be able to better follow the story, foreigners will find an English version of the novel in any bookstore in Metro Manila, or they can read the synopsis on the official website.
