Metro Manila · Britishness at its finest - impressions from the Great British Festival 2014
Brit pop on stage, teenagers posing in red telephone booths, kids playing soccer, fathers testing the comfort of English limousines - walking in Bonifacio High Street felt like strolling through London this weekend.
From March 7 to 9, 2014, the outdoor shopping district in Fort Bonifacio was filled with Britishness. The Embassy of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), in cooperation with other British organizations, organized the Great British Festival to show what the country has to offer in terms of culture, products, and career opportunities.
A trade exhibition featured teas, whiskeys, fashion items, elegant cars, and other goods made in Britain. UK in Miniature displayed smaller versions of landmarks like Big Ben and Stonehenge, popular photo opportunities for the numerous visitors. For those who prefer first-hand experiences, several booths provided information about traveling, studying, and working in the UK.
As the Britons are the inventors of modern sport, this aspect was naturally represented as well, with football fields, rugby drills, and wheelchair basketball.
Cinema in the Park showed popular British movies. On Saturday night, the green filled with young 'Directioners', fans of British pop band One Direction, to watch a documentary about their idols.
The main stage at Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater was another venue for music, dance and theatrical performances. Philippine live bands played Beatles songs and other Brit-inspired music until late in the evening.
