Manila is a Megacity for Cinephiles. At first glance it may seem that cinemas here only show the usual Hollywood blockbusters and a Pinoy romantic comedy every now and then. But make no mistake, the city hosts more than a dozen domestic and international film festivals every year.

A number of cultural and language institutes offer weekly or monthly movie nights to present their respective country. Film festivals and nights offer the opportunity to watch independent productions and documentaries that you would hardly find on TV or in the DVD section of your shopping mall. These movies feature surprising topics as well as avant-garde story telling and aesthetics. Movies from all over the world offer new insights beyond the stereotypes.

Non-English and non-Filipino films are usually shown in original version with subtitles. Admission is often free or very low. The indicated months of the festivals below are based on the 2013 events and only approximate as the schedules change slightly from year to year.
