Metro Manila · Sinulog Festival (Cebu City)
The Sinulog Festival is a cultural event that is celebrated every 3rd week of January in Cebu City, Visayas.
The background of this folk festival is as follows:
'Sinulog is a dance ritual in honor of the miraculous image of the Santo Nino. The dance moves to the sound of the drums and this resembles the current (Sinulog) of what was then known as Cebu's Pahina River. Thus, in Cebuano, they say it's Sinulog. More than just the meaning of the word is the significance of the dance. Historians now say that Sinulog, which is of pagan origin, is the link between the country's pagan past and its Christian present. Let's trace its history' (Sinulog Official Website).
This year however, the Megacitizens of Manila got lucky and were able to experience the celebrations as a local spin-off at the Market Market Mall in the Fort Bonifacio Hotspot. A sponsored 'mini Sinulog' was held which featured a number of competitions such as guitar-playing, handicrafting (out of paper strips), and painting with the Sinulog theme.
Of course, it won’t be a Sinulog Festival without the traditional folk art dances with colorful costumes and a parade with Sto. Niño around the mall. Those present were also able to indulge in local goods from the Cebu region such as native bags, coffee, guitars and other merchandise.
