The South Metro Manila Skyway Project is one of the Megacity's biggest improvements in transport infrastructure in recent years. Residents of the south can enjoy relative ease of travel when using the separated elevated motorway. An extension of the Skyway to connect the south and north of the Megacity is currently under construction.
Name and History
The official name of the motorway is Metro Manila Skyway, but most Manilenos just call it the "Skyway" or the "Alabang Skyway".
It was in 1995 when the Republic of the Philippines entered an agreement with the Philippine National Construction Corporation for supplemental toll operation. Stage 1 opened for traffic in 1999. A Stage 2 extension from Bicutan to Sucat was completed in 2010/11.
Along the Road
The Metro Manila Skyway crosses over much of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), straight from Gil Puyat Avenue to the Alabang-Zapote Road. That way it directly connects the Megacity's HotDot International and Alternative Makati with the HotSpot Alabang. It also traverses through highly urbanized and usually congested areas (in terms of the number of vehicles passing through) such as Pasay, Makati, Parañaque, and Muntinlupa. It is a great help to motorists because it relieves the SLEX from its usual heavy traffic that often turns it from an expressway into a car park.
The Skyway has a lenght of 16.3 kilometers or 10.1 miles. Its major junctions are the Intersection of SLEX and Buendia Avenue in the north and the SLEX and the Bunye Road in the south.
The motorway has 10 exits, three exit ramps, and two toll plazas. It has a height of 11 meters in San Martin De Porres-Bicutan, Hillsborough-Alabang, Makati CBD Exit, Don Bosco-Gil Puyat, 43 meters at Sales-Don Bosco and Bicutan-Toll A and 19 meters at the Bicutan Exit and in Sucat.
While traffic jams happen only very rarely on the skyway itself, traffic often builds up at the toll stations when streets are busy. Nevertheless, it is usually worth the wait.
A Stage 3 is currently under construction to extend the Skyway from Gil Puyat Avenue to Balintawak, Quezon City, in the north of the Megacity, connecting it with the North Luzon Express Way (NLEX). The tollway will reduce the travel time between both locations from two hours to an estimated 20 minutes. The extension will have a length of 14.8 kilometers. 26.59 billion pesos are budgeted for the construction project which started in April 2014 and is planned to be completed in 2016/17.
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) has announced the launch of two big - and long awaited - projects: the rehabilitation of NAIA Terminal 1 and the so-called Stage 3 of the Metro Manila Skyway. Both infrastructure projects target issues that have long been subjects of complaints and heated debates.
