Metro Manila · Aliwan Fiesta (April 14-16)
Featuring a float competition, dance parade, and a beauty pageant, the annual Aliwan Fiesta is rightfully dubbed as "The Mother of Festivals" in the Philippines. Participants come from all over the archipelago to represent their region and show the cultural diversity of the country.
In the Philippines, each region has its own annual festivals with street parades and competitions. For the Aliwan Fiesta, all 17 official regions can send one or two contingents of dancers, a float, and their beauty queen to represent them in the capital.
Our photos and video show the colorful and richly adorned floats before the start of the 2014 Aliwan Fiesta Parade at Roxas Boulevard, near the Manila Hotel. The floats are decorated with local flowers, textiles, and produce. Usually they portray the folklore and indigenous traditions that are typical for the respective region.
With hundreds of cultural street dancers and more than a dozen floats, the four kilometer-long parade along Roxas Boulevard is the highlight of the day.
The Aliwan Fiesta started in 2003 and takes place in the summer months of either April or May. The 2015 Aliwan Fiesta took place from April 23 to 25 at CCP Complex and Roxas Boulevard.
